Jesús R. Requena, Ph.D., leads the Prionlab group at the CIMUS Biomedical Research Institute of the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain (www.prionlab-requena.eu). He obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in this university and conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of South carolina and the Laboratory of Protein Biochemistry at NHLBI, Bethesda, under the supervision of Earl Stadtman. Prof. requena has worked on the biochemistry of mammalian prions for more than 15 years, focusing on their sutructure, as a means to understand their mechanism of propagation, and more recently, searching for therapies to treat prion diseases. He has published more than 70 papers in peer-reviewed journals. His most important contribution to the field has been, to date, the elucidation of the basic architecture of a mammalian prion, and based on this result, elaboration of the first physically plausible atomistic model of PrPSc. In 2018, he hosted the international yearly conference Prion2018 in Santiago de Compostela.
